Minister of State for Defence, Thomas Byrne TD, arrived in Nicosia, Cyprus, for meetings today and Monday with European ministers. The discussions will focus on the bloc’s security strategy, which Ireland will launch during its upcoming EU Presidency, and how Ireland will address the union's defence concerns.
Key topics include sustaining EU support for Ukraine, specifically military assistance and defence industrial cooperation, and leveraging European Union military industrial capacity. Maritime security and the role of EU naval operations will also be discussed. Byrne is also scheduled to meet General Seán Clancy to discuss EU defence initiatives.
Ministers will hold initial discussions on the forthcoming European Security Strategy, expected during Ireland’s EU Presidency. Byrne stated the meeting is at an «important juncture» as Ireland prepares to assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in under three weeks.
