PSNI Investigates Suspected Racially-Motivated Arson at Belfast Shankill Road Gospel Hall
The PSNI is investigating a suspected racially-motivated arson at an old Gospel Hall on Belfast's Shankill Road. The building, slated to become an international food store, was deliberately set ablaze and completely destroyed. Police are appealing for information regarding the incident.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is currently investigating a reported racially-motivated arson attack on the Shankill Road in Belfast. The incident, which occurred at an old Gospel Hall, was reported to the PSNI and the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) around 2:45 AM.
Last year, planning permission was granted to convert the disused Gospel Hall into a retail space, specifically an international food store. The NIFRS confirmed that the fire was deliberately set and completely destroyed the building.
A PSNI spokesperson stated that detectives have initiated inquiries, and a heightened police presence will be maintained in the area today. The spokesperson emphasized that the building had been acquired by legitimate business people who intended to create jobs for the local community. The PSNI affirmed its commitment to providing enhanced supervision, investigation, and support for victims of hate-motivated crimes, acknowledging the profound impact such incidents have on individuals, families, and communities.
While recognizing its crucial role in addressing and preventing hate incidents, the PSNI also highlighted that this is a broader societal issue requiring more than just policing to resolve. The public is urged to come forward with any information regarding this arson attack.
