EU Pledges to Extend Temporary Protection for Ukrainians Beyond March 2027

The EU pledges to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians beyond March 2027. EU Commissioner Magnus Brunner stated that most EU Council participants supported this idea. The European Commission will discuss the matter with Ukraine and member states, considering the exclusion of men of conscription age.

Following discussions at the EU Council meeting on Home Affairs in Luxembourg on June 4, the majority of participants leaned towards the idea of extending temporary protection for Ukrainians in the European Union beyond March 2027. This was reported by «European Pravda», citing a statement from EU Commissioner for Migration, Magnus Brunner.

As a result of the June 4 EU Council meeting, EU interior ministers concluded that extending temporary protection for Ukrainians is advisable. «Exactly one year ago, we extended temporary protection until March 2027. Of course, we discussed this today. And the opinion was… that we should extend temporary protection,» Brunner stated. He clarified that the European Commission now intends to discuss this issue with the Ukrainian side, as «it is important for us to hear the opinion of Ukrainians, what they also want.»

Equally important, he noted, is to consider the views of the EU member states that have hosted the most Ukrainian citizens. «Extending temporary protection is key, but there are different approaches. One of them is that we exclude men aged 23 to 60, those of conscription age. And this is also what Ukrainians want us to do,» the Eurocommissioner explained.

Magnus Brunner announced that in the coming weeks, the European Commission will present a relevant legislative proposal to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians. Earlier, «European Pravda» reported that Poland agrees to exclude Ukrainian men of conscription age and those who illegally left Ukraine from the EU's temporary protection program. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt also expressed support for revoking automatic temporary protection for Ukrainian men of conscription age.
