Gardaí are investigating the murder of 21-year-old Qayyam Balogun, fatally stabbed in Dublin city centre last Monday after being chased from a social event. One man is arrested, and another «person of interest» with prior convictions fled to Scotland. Balogun's family says he intervened in harassment; the motive is still unknown.
Gardaí are investigating the murder of 21-year-old Maynooth University student Qayyam Balogun, who was fatally stabbed on Clarendon Street in Dublin city centre last Monday morning. He was chased from a social event at Bewley's on Grafton Street by several men. Balogun was pronounced dead in hospital.
Authorities recovered knives, sent for DNA and fingerprint analysis, and gathered CCTV and social media footage showing men, some with knives, running in the area. A man in his 20s from the southeast was arrested and is being questioned. A woman in her 20s was released without charge. Gardaí are also searching for other «persons of interest», including one man from the south with prior convictions who fled to Northern Ireland and then Scotland. This man is currently on bail for a separate attack last year. Gardaí searched an Airbnb in Dublin 4, recovering blood-stained clothes.
The motive remains unclear, but confusion reportedly preceded the attack at the social event. A 19-year-old woman was also injured. Balogun's family stated he intervened when a woman was harassed, describing him as «very quiet, funny, friendly». Born in Ireland, Balogun's Nigerian family has lived in Dundalk for over 20 years. The Bewley's event was a Nigerian rap night.
