Ireland Manages Data Centre Energy Amid UN «Cautionary Tale» Report
Minister Darragh O’Brien affirmed Ireland is managing data centre energy use, despite a UN report calling Ireland a «cautionary tale.» New data centres must source 80 per cent of energy from renewables. The sector, worth €2.2 billion in 2024, supports 20,000 jobs.
Minister for Energy and the Environment Darragh O’Brien stated that the Irish Government is appropriately managing data centres' energy consumption. This follows a UN report citing Ireland as a «cautionary tale» regarding AI growth's environmental impact.
The report highlighted that data centres consume 21 per cent of Ireland’s electricity, projected to exceed 30 per cent soon. O’Brien referenced the Large Energy User Action Plan, requiring new data centres to source at least 80 per cent of their energy from new renewable sources for connection agreements. He emphasized balancing continued investment in leading technologies, which supports 180,000 ICT jobs, including 20,000 in data centres, with sustainable energy management. The data sector contributed €2.2 billion to the economy in 2024.
