Gardaí to Invest €150 Million in Nationwide Body Camera Rollout After Trials

An Garda Síochána will invest €150 million to deploy body-worn cameras nationwide after successful trials in Dublin, Limerick, and Waterford. GRA President Niall Hodgins stated the cameras enhance officer safety, provide digital evidence, and improve accountability. The investment will largely fund a digital evidence management system.

An Garda Síochána is set to invest €150 million in expanding the use of body-worn cameras nationwide, following successful trials conducted in Dublin, Limerick, and Waterford.

Body-worn cameras are devices capable of recording both video and audio, designed to be attached to a garda’s uniform. Officers have the discretion to activate these devices to record incidents as needed.

Niall Hodgins, President of the Garda Representative Association (GRA), lauded the initiative as «good news» for An Garda Síochána and its members. Speaking on Newstalk Breakfast, Hodgins emphasized that the cameras enhance the safety of frontline gardaí and provide «indisputable digital evidence,» thereby fostering public trust by documenting interactions. He noted that the activation of cameras often leads to an «instant de-escalation» of situations, and in cases where situations escalate, the camera accurately «captures the exact temperature of the event.» Hodgins added, «Whether it escalates or de-escalates, what we have then is an enhanced accountability of our members’ actions.»

Furthermore, Hodgins suggested that the widespread deployment of these cameras could lead to a reduction in complaints filed with the garda watchdog, Fiosrú. He clarified that the majority of the €150 million investment will be allocated to a digital evidence management system, which is essential for processing and securely storing the footage captured by the cameras. Hodgins also assured that «strict controls» will be in place regarding the use of any biometric data collected.

The body camera trials were conducted across five garda stations: Store Street Station, Pearse Street Station, and Kevin Street Station in Dublin city centre, along with Henry Street Station in Limerick city and Waterford Garda Station.
