Ireland Launches €10M EV Scrappage Scheme, Offering €8,500 Total Support

Ireland has launched a €10 million EV scrappage scheme, offering €5,000 for older vehicle disposal plus a €3,500 EV grant, totaling €8,500 support. Most funding targets areas outside major cities. This initiative aims to boost EV adoption, despite revised government targets.

The Irish government has launched a new €10 million pilot EV scrappage scheme, offering €5,000 for permanently disposing of a vehicle over 13 years old when purchasing an electric vehicle. This incentive is in addition to the existing €3,500 EV purchase grant, bringing the total support to €8,500 per vehicle.

Of the funding, €6.5 million (65%) is ringfenced for individuals outside Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, and Waterford, targeting areas with fewer public transport options. The remaining €3.5 million (35%) is allocated to applicants within these five cities.

Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien previously acknowledged that the government would not meet its original 2019 target of one million electric vehicles by 2030. Ireland’s Just Transition Commission recently advised the government to create more targeted supports for EVs and charging, prioritizing low-income, high-mileage, and car-dependent households.
