Grocery Inflation Slows to 5.5% by May 17; Summer Spending Jumps

Grocery inflation slowed to 5.5% by May 17, the lowest rate since July 2025, according to Worldpanel by Numerator. Shoppers increased spending on summer items, boosting take-home grocery sales by 2.8%. Dunnes Stores maintains market leadership at 23.8%.

Grocery prices increased by 5.5% in the four weeks to May 17, according to Worldpanel by Numerator, marking the slowest inflation rate since July 2025. This is over a percentage point lower than previous figures.

Take-home grocery sales rose by 2.8% during this period. Summer spending surged, with shoppers buying sun creams, ice creams, antipasti, and sparkling wines. An additional €2.5 million was spent on ice creams and sorbets, €700,000 on table sauces, €121,000 on antipasti, and €408,000 on sparkling wine and champagne.

Branded goods saw a 9.4% value growth, adding €159 million, while own-label grew 2.7%, adding €46.6 million. Premium ranges increased 3.4% in value. Online sales climbed 16.8% year-on-year, contributing almost €253 million to the market.

Dunnes Stores leads market share at 23.8% (up 4.3% year-on-year), closely followed by Tesco at 23.7% (up 6.1%). SuperValu holds 19.6%, Lidl 14.8% (up 0.4%), and Aldi 11% (up 0.1%).
