The EU will decide on extending temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees beyond March 2027 in July-September 2026. Discussions begin on June 4. Some countries, like Poland and Denmark, are already considering restrictions for conscription-aged men and new arrivals from specific regions.
The European Union plans to decide on extending temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees beyond March 2027 in July or September 2026. Discussions on this matter by EU interior ministers will take place in Brussels on June 4, but no decision is expected on that day.
Currently, discussions on the future status of Ukrainian refugees are at an early stage. The European Commission has not yet presented a specific proposal, but a document will be prepared after discussions with member states following June 4.
The Temporary Protection Directive, introduced in March 2022, granted millions of Ukrainians access to rights in the EU and is valid until March 4, 2027. Poland supports excluding Ukrainian men of conscription age from the extended temporary protection scheme. Denmark is considering restrictions for men aged 23-60 and suspending protection for new arrivals from 14 regions less affected by the war.
