Irish EV Registrations Double in May; Electrified Vehicles Now 65.7% of New Car Sales
Electrified vehicles now account for 65.7% of new car sales in Ireland, with EV registrations doubling in May to 2,335 units. Overall new car sales are up 4.7% year-on-year. Toyota remains the top brand, while Volkswagen leads EV sales.
Electrified vehicles (EVs, hybrids, PHEVs) now constitute 65.7% of all new car sales in Ireland. New car sales overall are up 4.7% year-on-year, with 83,038 registrations in the first five months. May saw a 38.6% increase with 10,087 registrations, driven by a doubling of electric car sales to 2,335 units.
Hybrids remain the top choice at 28% of registrations, followed by EVs at 23%, petrol cars at 21.4%, and PHEVs at 14.7%. Diesel sales have dropped to 12.9%. Toyota is the bestselling brand with 14% market share, and its Yaris Cross is the bestselling model with 2,738 registrations. Volkswagen is the bestselling EV brand with 2,464 units, and its ID4 is the top EV model.
Used car imports increased by 38.2% to 38,960 vehicles, with Japan supplying over half. Light commercial vehicle registrations rose 15% to 20,410, led by Ford. However, the truck market decreased by 4.3% to 1,457 registrations by the end of May.
