Aughinish Alumina Warns Ireland of Grid Impact if Russia Sanctions Imposed

Aughinish Alumina warned the Irish Government that sanctioning its alumina sales to Russia would threaten its viability and impact Ireland's energy grids. The company denies claims its alumina ends up in Russian weapons. The European Commission has decided against sanctions on Aughinish, citing potential disruption to the European aluminium market.

Aughinish Alumina, the Russian-owned refinery in Shannon, has warned the Irish Government that sanctioning its alumina sales to Moscow would impact Ireland's national gas and electricity grids. The plant, which exports electricity for approximately 200,000 Irish households and contributes €25 million annually to the natural gas grid's maintenance, stated that restricting sales to Russia would jeopardize its viability and employment.

The company's lobbying campaign follows an investigation by European media, including The Irish Times, alleging that Aughinish alumina shipped to Russia was converted into aluminium by Rusal-owned factories and then sold to Russian weapons manufacturers, ending up in missiles used in Ukraine. Aughinish denies that the majority of its alumina goes to Russia, stating that in 2025, 55% was supplied to European and global industries, with 45% exported to Russia. The company also claims a warranty from Rusal that aluminium from Aughinish alumina is not used in military applications.

Aughinish argues that sanctions would not materially impact Russia, which is a net aluminium exporter and relies on Aughinish for only 10% of its alumina needs, but could stoke inflation in European commodity markets. The European Commission has decided against proposing sanctions on Aughinish Alumina at this time, citing potential disruption to the European aluminium market, as Aughinish is a key supplier to several EU smelting companies. The Commission is preparing a 21st sanctions package against Russia, with a draft legal text expected by June 15.
