Russian Drone Hits Romanian Apartment Building, Injuring Two Near Ukraine Border

A Russian drone hit an apartment building in Galati, Romania, on May 28-29, injuring two people and causing a fire. This incident, the first residential strike in Romania, occurred during renewed Russian drone attacks near the Ukrainian border. Separately, drone attacks were reported in Ukraine's Odesa and Donetsk regions, and Russia's Volgograd region.

A Russian drone struck an apartment building in Galati, Romania, a NATO member, on the night of May 28-29, injuring two people. The Romanian Defence Ministry reported that the drone entered Romanian airspace during renewed Russian attacks on civilian and infrastructure targets in Ukraine near the river border. The drone was tracked by radar to Galati, where it crashed onto a 10th-floor apartment roof, igniting a fire.

Emergency services treated two people for abrasions, and approximately 70 residents were evacuated. The drone's explosive payload detonated. Two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled after the drone detection. This marks the first time a Russian drone has hit a residential building in Romania, though incursions have occurred dozens of times since 2022.

Separately, Izmail port in Ukraine's Odesa region was attacked by multiple drones. In Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, a Ukrainian drone attack killed three utility workers and seriously injured a fourth in Vuhlehirsk, according to Denis Pushilin, the Kremlin-installed head of the region. Four others were injured in separate incidents in Russian-controlled areas of Donetsk. Russia also reported repelling a massive drone attack in its Volgograd region, where an apartment building and infrastructure were targeted, with no casualties.
