Government Reopens Summer Program Applications for Vulnerable Children After Initial "Botch"

The Government will reopen summer program applications next week for vulnerable children after a "botched" initial attempt. Tánaiste Simon Harris confirmed the move, following criticism over a short application window. The program supports children with complex needs, and Harris acknowledged the need for improved care for disabled adults.

The Government will reopen applications for summer programs next week for children with complex needs or from disadvantaged backgrounds. This decision follows criticism from Sinn Féin deputy leader Pearse Doherty, who called the initial nine-day application window "deeply unfair and badly handled."

Tánaiste Simon Harris announced the reopening in the Dáil, stating that Minister for Education Hildegarde Naughton had listened to concerns from schools and parents. Harris emphasized the government's commitment to the program, noting a 210 percent increase in participation in recent years. The summer education program offers both home-based and school-based support during holidays.

Doherty welcomed the reopening but highlighted ongoing pressure on schools and the program's limitation, which prevents medically vulnerable children from choosing both home-based and school-based options. Separately, Labour Party finance spokesman Ged Nash questioned Harris on plans to implement €446 million in levies on government departments to cover an overspend in the Department of Education, asking which services would be cut or scaled back. Harris defended the levy, stating all departments would have higher budgets in 2027 than in 2026 and that savings could be found in public service.

Harris also agreed with Social Democrats deputy leader Cian O’Callaghan on the need to rebalance respite care for disabled people away from private for-profit providers. He acknowledged the government's shortcomings in providing care for disabled adults after their parents die, noting recent Cabinet committee decisions to shift from a "crisis approach to a planned approach" for supporting adults with intellectual disabilities.
