Taoiseach Micheál Martin stated that the Government's energy crisis support package "is not a permanent answer" at the Fianna Fáil annual 1916 commemoration at Arbour Hill in Dublin. He acknowledged the impact of rising energy and fuel prices, emphasizing the need for long-term solutions through investment and reform to reduce energy prices.

Martin highlighted ongoing investments in transport, international connectivity, and new electricity networks to lower costs for consumers. He mentioned reviewing regulations to prioritize affordability and pledged to continue this agenda. He linked the 1916 Rising generation to Ireland's EU membership and its upcoming presidency in July.

During Ireland's EU presidency, Martin said the country will lead negotiations on fundamental issues and support energy security and affordability. Priorities include reforming capital markets, protecting essential programs like CAP, expanding research through Horizon, increasing competition, and enhancing skills. He also emphasized support for Ukraine and humanitarian aid for conflict-affected regions.

Martin concluded by stating that every government member must ensure the Irish presidency demonstrates professionalism and ambition for Europe. He expressed hope that obstacles to financing for Ukraine would be lifted, referencing the Hungarian elections.
