Ireland Built 250,000 Homes 2015-2025, Exceeding 1930s Construction Levels

Ireland constructed 250,000 homes between 2015 and 2025, surpassing the 82,000 homes built from 1932 to 1942. This indicates a greater level of construction in both absolute and per-capita terms, with 10 percent of all homes built in the last decade, demonstrating progress despite ongoing housing needs.

In response to Seán O’Brien’s letter on May 25th regarding housing crisis solutions, it is accurate to note that the State undertook large-scale housing construction during the 1930s. Specifically, between 1932 and 1942, a total of 82,000 homes were built.

It is also important to acknowledge that Ireland is currently experiencing a period of significant home construction. From 2015 to 2025, approximately 250,000 homes were constructed across the State. This represents a higher level of construction compared to the 1930s, both in absolute numbers and on a per-capita basis.

Remarkably, 10 percent of all homes in the country have been built within the last decade. While the demand for housing remains substantial, it is crucial to recognize the progress being made in addressing the housing shortage.
