CCPC Warns Schools Against Restrictive, Costly Uniform Policies Ahead of New Year

The CCPC has warned schools against restrictive and costly uniform policies, citing ongoing complaints about exclusive suppliers and bespoke items. They urge schools to adopt generic options and competitive processes to ease financial pressure on families. This follows previous recommendations and highlights both bad and good practices.

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has written to schools, urging them to avoid restrictive and costly uniform policies. This reminder comes as parents prepare for the new school year, with the CCPC highlighting issues like exclusive suppliers, bespoke crested items, and limited shopping options.

Despite recommendations made last year to use generic uniform items and ensure competitive processes for suppliers, the CCPC continues to receive complaints. Grainne Griffin, director of communications, consumer information, and financial education, stated that many families are forced to overpay for branded uniforms. She emphasized that even small policy changes, such as allowing generic items or iron-on crests, can significantly ease financial burdens.

The CCPC cited examples of bad practices, including a school with only one expensive supplier despite cheaper alternatives, and another insisting on a newly crested PE uniform without non-crested options. Conversely, a good practice example showed a school allowing both tracksuits and traditional uniforms, with optional iron-on crests and no penalties for not wearing the uniform.
