Public Supports College Green Pedestrianization in Dublin, Planning Application Expected This Summer

A new report reveals that 81.2% of respondents support plans to pedestrianize Dublin’s College Green, creating a safer and greener city center. Dublin City Council will use this feedback for the final design, with a planning application expected this summer. Work is anticipated to begin next year and finish by 2030.

A new consultation report indicates that the vast majority of the public supports plans to transform Dublin’s College Green into a pedestrianized plaza. The report synthesizes feedback from a four-week design consultation, which garnered over 1,800 submissions from local businesses, residents, and disability representative organizations.

Of the respondents, 81.2% expressed support for the proposals. Dublin City Council stated that this demonstrates «clear backing for a safer, greener, and more accessible city centre.» Respondents specifically endorsed prioritizing pedestrians, facilitating cycling access, and reducing car traffic.

Mock-ups for the redesigned College Green, situated in front of Trinity College, and Dame Street leading to the junction with South Great George’s Street, illustrate a fully pedestrianized area. Dubbed «Grow College Green,» the initiative is envisioned as a flagship project to «reimagine the historic centre of Dublin city, creating a new space that is a destination for everyone.»

The council intends to utilize insights from this recent consultation to refine the final design before submitting a planning application later this summer. While Dublin City Council and its project partner, the National Transport Authority, have not yet formally announced a completion date, work is widely anticipated to commence next year and conclude by 2030. Plans are also in place to re-route buses currently traversing the area.
