TII Warns €31 Billion Road Network Underfunded, Needs €1.8 Billion for Rail Renewal

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) warns that current funding is inadequate for Ireland's €31 billion road network and ageing rail assets. TII CEO Lorcan O’Connor stated €1.8 billion is needed for rail renewal over 20 years. He also noted a significant rise in electric vehicles and concerns over the Greenway programme.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) has warned that current funding is insufficient to protect Ireland's €31 billion road network and renew ageing assets. TII Chief Executive Lorcan O’Connor informed the Oireachtas Committee on Transport that steady and reasonable investment is crucial for the safety and usability of motorways, railways, and roads. He highlighted challenges from ageing infrastructure, increased congestion, and climate adaptation needs, stating additional funding is required to maintain the network and address resilience and climate change.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, M50 traffic has risen by 10%, and Luas services are projected to carry 60 million passengers in 2026. TII plans timetable changes for next year to meet demand. The light rail network, valued at €2 billion, costs TII €115 million annually to operate and maintain, generating €60 million in ticket revenues this year. However, €1.8 billion is needed over the next 20 years for rail infrastructure and vehicle renewal.

TII acknowledged concerns regarding the Greenway programme's delivery, with farmers previously raising issues about compulsory purchase orders. TII is collaborating with the Department of Transport, which is reviewing its Greenway Strategy and the Code of Practice for Greenways. Sinn Féin TD Louis O’Hara and Labour Senator Nessa Cosgrove noted landowner frustration over lack of involvement. O’Connor also reported a significant increase in electric vehicles (EVs) in Ireland, now totaling around 250,000, with over 63,000 added last year, partly linked to the Middle East conflict's impact on fuel.
