Irish By-Elections Reveal Hard Right's Transfer Defeat and System Criticism

Irish by-elections demonstrated the power of transfers in the PR-STV system, leading to the hard right's defeat. Influential figures like Dr. Marcus de Brun and Niall Boylan criticized the system. Gerard Hutch, a controversial figure, and anti-immigration organizer Malachy Steenson collectively secured 20% of the vote in Dublin Central, highlighting the impact of transfers and potential hard-right gains.

Recent Irish by-elections highlighted the transformative effect of transfers in the PR-STV system, resulting in defeats for the hard right. Dr. Marcus de Brun, facing Medical Council allegations, called for a «military coup d’etat». Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín criticized Fine Gael's win with Labour's help, while radio host Niall Boylan, an Independent Ireland candidate, blamed the «voting system» for Noel Thomas's loss.

Boylan's questioning of the system, despite his deep knowledge, raised concerns. Noel Thomas, a former Fianna Fáil councillor who joined Independent Ireland after controversial comments on immigration, secured 10,007 first-preference votes. His candidacy followed his attendance at meetings of the self-proclaimed Irish Republican Brotherhood. The by-elections were seen as a significant moment for the anti-immigration movement.

In Dublin Central, Gerard Hutch, a figure under Spanish investigation for money laundering, received 2,817 votes (4,466 after transfers), coming fourth with over 11% despite refusing to explain policies. He and Cllr Malachy Steenson, an anti-immigration protest organizer, collectively garnered 20% of the vote, suggesting a potential hard-right seat in the next general election. Nearly 70% of Steenson's non-transferable votes went to Hutch, illustrating the impact of transfers.
