Irish construction firms and state agencies report a widespread shortage of specialized workers, causing project delays. Minister James Lawless is hosting a roundtable to address these skill gaps, particularly in AI and digital engineering. The government has doubled skills investment since 2020, including €79 million for apprenticeships.

Irish construction firms and state agencies have informed the government of a widespread shortage of specialized construction and infrastructure workers, leading to project delays across the sector.

Minister for Further and Higher Education, James Lawless, is hosting a second National Skills Roundtable today at University College Dublin. The event brings together builders, representative bodies, and state agencies to address these critical workforce issues.

An informal survey conducted by the Department of Further and Higher Education prior to today’s meeting revealed that the vast majority of companies reported significant skills gaps. A primary concern is the rapid technological change impacting required skills, particularly the increasing demand for expertise in AI and digital engineering. Industry leaders have emphasized the importance of modernizing training and enhancing the promotion of construction careers to meet evolving workforce demands.

Minister Lawless is expected to highlight the government’s commitment, noting a doubling of investment in skills since 2020, which includes €79 million allocated for apprenticeship delivery in the most recent budget. He will inform the roundtable that 87 apprenticeship programs are now available nationwide, offering expanded opportunities for career development in construction and related fields. Lawless will also underscore the government’s objective to translate this investment into practical capacity by increasing apprenticeship registrations and expanding training programs tailored to the demands of modern building practices.
