Fianna Fáil Backs Bill to Reverse Ireland's Nuclear Energy Ban Amid Energy Crisis
Fianna Fáil has agreed to support a bill by TD James O'Connor to lift Ireland's nuclear energy ban, allowing consideration of all energy options amid the current crisis. The party also discussed its worst bye-election results in 100 years, securing 4.2% and 8.8% in two constituencies.
Fianna Fáil TDs, Senators, and MEPs have agreed to support Cork East TD James O'Connor's bill to reverse Ireland's ban on nuclear energy. This decision comes as the Coalition addresses the ongoing energy crisis.
Deputy O'Connor clarified his proposal is not a vote to build a nuclear power station, but to allow Ireland to assess all serious energy options. Energy Minister Darragh O'Brien and Taoiseach Micheál Martin both stated that Ireland should consider nuclear energy without a statutory bar.
The parliamentary party also discussed Fianna Fáil's recent bye-election results, which marked the party's worst showing in 100 years. The party secured 4.2% in Dublin Central and 8.8% in Galway West. Micheál Martin downplayed the results, noting that bye-elections are not predictors of General Elections, citing past examples where the party later gained or held seats. However, several speakers expressed disappointment over the low vote share.
