EU Extends Sanctions Against Russia for Human Rights Violations Until May 28, 2027

The EU has extended sanctions against Russia for human rights violations until May 28, 2027. The restrictive measures apply to 72 individuals and one legal entity, including asset freezes and travel bans. The EU condemns repression and the deteriorating human rights situation in Russia, especially amid the war against Ukraine.

The Council of the European Union has decided to extend until May 28, 2027, the sanctions mechanism targeting individuals responsible for human rights violations, repression against the population and democratic opposition, as well as undermining democracy and the rule of law in the Russian Federation. This is stated in a relevant announcement published by «European Pravda».

Currently, the EU's restrictive measures apply to 72 individuals and one legal entity. Individuals and organizations included in the EU sanctions list are subject to asset freezes, and EU citizens and companies are prohibited from providing them with any funds. Furthermore, these individuals are subject to a travel ban to EU countries.

The statement emphasizes that «the EU remains steadfast in its condemnation of human rights violations and repression in Russia and is deeply concerned about the further deterioration of the human rights situation in the country, especially in the context of Russia's war against Ukraine».

It is worth noting that on May 11, the Council of the European Union also imposed sanctions against individuals and legal entities responsible for the abduction of Ukrainian children from temporarily occupied territories. These sanctions were announced during a high-level meeting co-chaired by the European Union, Ukraine, and Canada. The meeting aimed to plan concrete steps for the return of children abducted by Russia to Ukraine and to hold Russia accountable.
