Labour Leader Bacik Warns Ireland's Economy "Dangerously Dependent" on Tech Giants Amid Job Cuts

Labour leader Ivana Bacik warned the Dáil that Ireland's economy is «dangerously dependent» on tech giants, citing Meta's recent 350 job cuts and over 20,000 tech job losses in the past year. She criticized weak labor laws and called for a new industrial strategy. Taoiseach Micheál Martin defended the economy's growth and Ireland's strong AI workforce and labor laws.

Labour leader Ivana Bacik stated on Tuesday in the Dáil that Ireland's economy is «dangerously dependent on a handful of tech giants», who exploit the Government's fear of investment withdrawal and job relocation. Her remarks followed Meta's recent cut of up to 350 jobs in Ireland, approximately 20 percent of its Irish workforce, exceeding the anticipated 10 percent.

Bacik highlighted that the tech sector has shed over 20,000 jobs in the past year. She criticized tech companies for using terms like «modernisation» and «flattening teams» to mask ruthless cost-cutting and over-hiring, often under the guise of AI development, to satisfy shareholders. She argued that Ireland's labor laws are too weak, making the country vulnerable.

Bacik called for a robust industrial strategy to foster indigenous Irish enterprise and innovation, particularly in AI and tech. She also advocated for stronger collective bargaining rights, enhanced worker protections during redundancies, and significant investment in education, retraining, and upskilling. She stressed the need for a government willing to confront tech billionaires.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin countered, asserting that the economy is growing, and employment remains consistent, supported by a resilient SME sector alongside multinationals. He acknowledged the need to further develop SMEs and improve company scaling, noting that many Irish companies have grown by securing contracts with large multinationals. Martin also highlighted Ireland's strong position in AI-skilled population, as identified by the IMF, and defended the country's labor laws.
