Ursula von der Leyen to Visit Lithuania on May 28 to Coordinate Drone Incursion Response
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will visit Lithuania on May 28 to coordinate the response to drone incursions. She will meet with Baltic leaders to strengthen joint defence. The visit follows a series of drone incidents, for which von der Leyen holds Russia and Belarus responsible.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will visit Lithuania on Tuesday, May 28. The visit comes amid a series of drone incursions that have prompted citizens in the Baltic states to seek shelter. This was reported by Politico, citing «European Pravda».
According to three officials familiar with the visit's details, von der Leyen plans to meet with the heads of state and government of the Baltic countries. The meeting aims to facilitate the coordination of response measures to these threats. Commissioner for Defence Andrius Kubilius will also be part of the delegation.
One official noted that the visit is intended not only to demonstrate solidarity with the Baltic states but also to strengthen joint defence capabilities. This will be achieved through the European Commission's flagship funding and planning programs. Von der Leyen previously stated that Russia and Belarus are directly responsible for the drones that pose a threat to people's lives and safety on the EU's eastern flank.
Recently, Lithuania declared an air alert after a «stray» drone was detected near the border with Belarus, activating NATO's air policing mission over the Baltics. Earlier, two Ukrainian drones heading for targets in Russia crashed into an empty oil depot in Latvia, causing a political crisis. Last week, a Romanian aircraft shot down a drone in Estonian airspace.
