Irish Housing Crisis: Calls for Cross-Party Action Amid Rising Costs and Dáil Disputes

Ireland faces a housing crisis with €1.3 billion spent annually on rental supports and homelessness, yet no State ownership. Calls for cross-party action intensify amid Dáil disputes and rising costs. Separately, debates continue on the three-day abortion waiting period and accusations of anti-Semitism silencing criticism of Israel.

New figures on evictions and rising rents in Ireland have sparked calls for a cross-party initiative on housing, similar to Sláintecare, to address the crisis effectively. Critics argue that current political point-scoring in the Dáil, exemplified by Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald's conduct towards Taoiseach Micheál Martin, undermines confidence and fails to help renters or first-time buyers.

Fabian McGrath highlighted that approximately €1.3 billion is spent annually on rental supports and homelessness services, including €100 million for the Rental Assistance Scheme, €432 million for HAP Payments, €350 million for Rent Tax Credits, and €418 million for homelessness services (with €144 million for commercial hotels/B&Bs). Despite this significant expenditure, which increases yearly, the State gains no ownership, with funds primarily benefiting landlords and property companies. McGrath questions why State-owned housing, like past social housing, is not being pursued given these costs.

Separately, Eilís Mulroy of the Pro Life Campaign challenged claims by Start and IFPA regarding the three-day waiting period for abortion. National figures for 2024 show 12,641 first appointments and 10,457 second appointments. Mulroy argues that over 1,000 women did not return for a second appointment for reasons other than those cited by Start and IFPA (e.g., negative pregnancy test, miscarriage), suggesting IFPA's 2% figure for continuing pregnancies is unrepresentative. She asserts that the three-day wait saves lives and should be welcomed as a healthcare measure. Philip Brady also praised Justine McCarthy's article on accusations of anti-Semitism being used to silence criticism of Israel's actions against Palestinians.
