EirGrid Seeks Feedback on Kildare Dublin Grid Reinforcement Project Until July 10th
EirGrid is reinforcing Ireland's electricity grid, focusing on community engagement for projects like the Kildare Dublin Grid Reinforcement. This aims to meet rising energy demand and renewable targets. Public feedback on technology options for the Steelstown-Carrickmines connection is open until July 10th, with information events scheduled.
EirGrid, Ireland’s electricity grid operator, is undertaking its most ambitious program to strengthen the transmission system, aiming to meet significant growth in energy demand and achieve 80 percent renewable energy targets. This involves delivering unprecedented infrastructure across the country, with a strong focus on community engagement.
The Kildare Dublin Grid Reinforcement Project is critical for one of Ireland's fastest-growing regions, driven by residential, commercial, and industrial development, and electrification. The project includes new 220/110kV substations near Steelstown and Hynestown, and associated cables linking them to Maynooth, Inchicore, and Carrickmines substations.
Following a May 2025 consultation on substation locations, EirGrid is now seeking public feedback until July 10th on technology options for connecting a proposed Steelstown substation to an existing Carrickmines substation. This connection will distribute power across Kildare and west Dublin. Public information events will be held on June 3rd (Ballyboden Wanderers GAA Club), June 4th (Rathcoole Community Centre), June 10th (Thomas Davis GAA Club), and June 11th (Samuel Beckett Civic Campus), all from 12–8pm.
This project is part of 381 transmission infrastructure projects EirGrid will deliver over the next five years with ESB Networks, including the Powering Up Dublin Programme and the Celtic Interconnector, a subsea cable to France powering 450,000 homes by spring 2028. EirGrid’s planned investment for grid strengthening was approved in late 2025.
