Yves Sakila Family Awaits Postmortem Results After Henry Street Death

The family of Yves Sakila, who died after being restrained by security on Henry Street, awaits postmortem results. His solicitor, John Cullen, stressed the need for transparency and a potential independent investigation. Sakila's death has sparked calls for an inquiry into security restraint practices and the impact of anti-migrant rhetoric in Ireland.

The family of Yves Sakila, 35, who died after being restrained by security on Henry Street, Dublin, last Friday, has not yet received initial postmortem results. Their solicitor, John Cullen, stated the urgency for this information to determine if an independent pathologist is needed, especially if the State Pathologist cannot ascertain the cause of death.

Sakila, a homeless Congolese man who struggled with drug issues, was restrained by five men outside Arnotts Department Store following an alleged shoplifting incident. Video footage shows five men holding him prone on the ground, with two appearing to push his head and neck, and one using a knee on his head and neck. Sakila was later pronounced dead at Mater Hospital.

At a press conference, Fine Gael councillor Yemi Adenuga and Black Coalition Ireland spokesperson linked Sakila's death to increasing anti-migrant rhetoric in Ireland, arguing that such hostility has consequences. She highlighted that of 4,800 shoplifting incidents in 2024, Sakila was the only one to die before reaching a Garda station. Adenuga called for legislation on safe restraint by private security and for politicians to reflect on their rhetoric.

Dr. Ebun Joseph, Special Rapporteur for Racial Equality, and the Irish Council for Civil Liberties expressed profound concern over the incident, calling for a full, transparent, independent investigation. Gardaí have assigned a Senior Investigating Officer to the case, being handled by the Serious Crimes Unit, and have appealed for witnesses, but are withholding postmortem results for operational reasons.
