US Citizen, 72, Seeks Irish Residency: Stamp 0 Visa for 9-Month Stays
A 72-year-old US citizen wants to live in Ireland for 4-6 months annually. The Stamp 0 visa allows financially self-sufficient retirees to reside for nine months, requiring continuous residency and specific financial/health proofs. US citizens are increasingly moving to Ireland, with 10,000 arrivals in 2024.
A 72-year-old US citizen, unhappy with her home country and seeking to escape summer heat, wishes to live in Ireland for four to six months annually. She is financially self-sufficient. While US citizens can visit Ireland visa-free for 90 days within any 180-day period, longer stays require Department of Justice permission.
Immigration solicitor Maura Kavanagh explains that for stays exceeding 90 days, the Stamp 0 permission is an option for retirees. This allows non-permanent residency for those with sufficient means, but requires «continuous residency», limiting time outside Ireland to 90 days per 12-month period. This means the reader's desired four-to-six-month stay falls between the 90-day visitor limit and the nine-month Stamp 0 requirement.
To qualify for Stamp 0, applicants cannot work and must prove an annual income of €50,000, access to funds for a home purchase, and full private medical insurance. They must also provide police clearance certificates for the past five years. The average processing time for a Stamp 0 application is four months. If applying now, the reader could reside in Ireland by October. Record numbers of US citizens are moving to Ireland; nearly 10,000 moved in 2024, up from 4,900 in 2023, and 18,910 sought citizenship in 2025.
