Kazakhstan Court Authorizes $1.4 Billion Collection from Gazprom for Naftogaz

A Kazakhstan court authorized the forced collection of over $1.4 billion from Russia's Gazprom for Ukraine's Naftogaz. This enforces an international arbitration ruling, marking the first public foreign court decision for this award. The judgment became final in Switzerland on March 13, 2026, after Gazprom's appeals were rejected.

A Kazakhstan court has authorized the forced collection of over $1.4 billion from Russia's Gazprom in favor of Ukraine's Naftogaz. This decision enforces an international arbitration ruling, making it the first public foreign court decision to allow compulsory enforcement of this award in a separate jurisdiction, according to Naftogaz Group CEO Serhii Koretsky.

The $1.4 billion judgment became final in Switzerland on March 13, 2026, after the Swiss Federal Supreme Court rejected Gazprom's appeal. Naftogaz initiated ICC arbitration in Switzerland in September 2022 after Gazprom ceased paying for contracted gas transit volumes through Ukraine. A Zurich-seated tribunal, on June 20, 2025, ordered Gazprom to pay $1.37 billion for unpaid transit services, plus interest and legal costs. Gazprom did not participate in the arbitration and its subsequent appeals were dismissed.
