Irish Leaders Clash Over Record Rent Hikes and Housing Crisis

Irish opposition leaders, including Sinn Féin's Mary Lou McDonald and Social Democrats' Holly Cairns, confronted Taoiseach Micheál Martin over record rent increases and the housing crisis. McDonald accused the government of causing the hikes, while Martin blamed supply shortages and criticized opposition solutions. The Dáil session was marked by heated exchanges and interventions from the Ceann Comhairle.

Irish opposition parties clashed with Taoiseach Micheál Martin during Leaders’ Questions following a Daft report showing the largest rent increase in almost 25 years. Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald accused the government of opening «floodgates for massive rent increases» with its reforms, leading to record rents and evictions.

Martin countered that high rents stem from supply shortages and that freezing rents, as suggested by some, would destroy supply. He cited the Housing Commission's recommendations for reforms and noted 36,000 new houses were delivered last year. McDonald called Martin a «sleiveen» for suggesting families face €30,000 annual rent in Dublin and €27,000 in Galway, refusing to withdraw the remark.

The Ceann Comhairle, Verona Murphy, repeatedly intervened due to interruptions and disrespect. Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns also criticized the government's housing policies, calling the system «fundamentally broken.» Martin dismissed opposition proposals as lacking substance and failing to increase supply beyond current government efforts.
