Man Died from Neck Compression While Restrained in Dublin on December 14, 2024

Dan Andrei Alexuc, 41, died from neck compression while restrained outside a Dublin pub on December 14, 2024. An inquest heard contributory factors included alcohol intoxication and heart disease. The case was adjourned as criminal proceedings are being considered, with a garda investigation ongoing and Fiosrú involved.

Dan Andrei Alexuc, 41, a married father of two from Newcastle, Co Dublin, died from «manual compression of the neck while restrained in a prone position» after an incident outside a Temple Bar pub on December 14, 2024. He became unwell after being restrained by security staff, with gardaí responding to a disturbance on Essex Street East shortly before 1am.

Alexuc, originally from Romania and a service delivery team manager with Circet, was taken to St James’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1.55am. A postmortem by State pathologist SallyAnne Collis listed acute alcohol intoxication and hypertensive heart disease as contributory factors.

The inquest at Dublin District Coroner’s Court was adjourned to November 18, as criminal proceedings are being considered. Detective Inspector Damien Kelly applied for the adjournment under Section 25 (1) of the Coroners Act, stating a garda investigation is ongoing and a file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The independent policing watchdog, Fiosrú, is also involved, focusing on the role of gardaí.
