Jet Fuel Market Adapts to Crisis; Ryanair CEO Cites New Sourcing

The jet fuel market is adapting to the energy crisis, with European supply fears easing despite higher costs. Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary reports new international sourcing and increased refinery output. However, sustained high prices could lead to lower airline profits and higher consumer costs, with long-term impacts tied to the Strait of Hormuz reopening and fossil fuel reliance.

The energy crisis has complex and unpredictable impacts, particularly on the jet fuel market. While fears of a European supply shortage have eased, the market remains vulnerable with higher supply costs. Despite short-term price declines for passengers, as seen with Ryanair, these costs are expected to eventually affect consumers.

The blockage of the Strait of Hormuz has caused crude oil prices to rise by approximately 60%. However, refined product markets like jet fuel are influenced by additional factors. Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary noted Europe is sourcing jet fuel from other international markets. Refineries have increased output, fuel stocks have been released, and demand has slightly decreased due to flight cancellations and passenger booking hesitancy.

In April, the International Energy Agency warned Europe had only six weeks of jet fuel left. Now, airlines are confident the holiday season will not be disrupted, though the market remains tight and volatile. Sustained higher jet fuel prices will likely lead to lower airline profits, higher consumer prices, or both. Analysts fear significant market pressure if the Strait of Hormuz doesn't reopen within the next month, potentially increasing prices for fuel, heating oil, diesel, and electricity. Even with reopening, shipping normalization will incur substantial economic costs.

Governments, including Ireland's, face short-term pressures regarding consumer and business support, especially if the crisis extends into winter. This also highlights long-term issues of reliance on imported fossil fuels, the need for renewable energy development, and climate change mitigation, areas where the airline industry has a notable impact.
