Investigations Focus on Force Used in Death of Yves Sakila, 30s, in Dublin

Yves Sakila, in his mid-30s, died after being restrained by security guards in Dublin following an alleged shoplifting incident. Investigations are focusing on the force used during his restraint. The incident, which also injured an elderly man, is being investigated by Gardaí and Fiosrú, the Police Ombudsman.

Investigations are underway into the death of Congolese man Yves Sakila, in his mid-30s, who died after being restrained by security guards in Dublin city centre last Friday. Authorities are examining whether the manner and force used during his restraint contributed to his death. Further postmortem analysis is required to determine the exact cause.

Sakila was suspected of shoplifting on Henry Street shortly after 5pm and was pursued by security personnel. During his flight, he knocked an elderly man, in his 80s, to the ground, seriously injuring him. The pensioner remains hospitalized. When gardaí arrived, Sakila was being held on the ground by security guards. Gardaí handcuffed Sakila but quickly realized he was unwell, removed the handcuffs, and began CPR. He was transported to Mater Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Video footage, nearly five minutes long, shows five individuals, some identified as security personnel, restraining Sakila face down on the street before gardaí arrived. One man briefly attempted to place his knee on Sakila’s head or neck, then used hands to hold his head/neck down while others held his body and legs. The Garda investigation is ongoing, and the incident has been referred to Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, as legally required under the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024, for any death or serious injury involving Garda contact.
