Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Calls Joint Russian-Belarusian Nuclear Drills Unprecedented Challenge

Ukraine's Foreign Ministry has labeled the deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus and joint nuclear drills an unprecedented challenge to global security. These actions violate the NPT and set a dangerous precedent. Ukraine calls for a strong international response and increased support.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has assessed the deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus and the conduct of joint nuclear exercises between the two states as an unprecedented challenge to the global security architecture. In this regard, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on international partners for a strong and consolidated response.

The diplomatic agency emphasizes that the joint practice of nuclear strikes directly violates fundamental Articles 1 and 2 of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). These articles strictly prohibit nuclear-weapon states from transferring control over weapons of mass destruction technologies, and non-nuclear signatories from receiving it. By transforming Belarus into its nuclear foothold near NATO borders, the Kremlin de facto legitimizes the proliferation of nuclear weapons globally and creates a dangerous precedent for other authoritarian regimes. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stresses that such actions must receive unequivocal and strong condemnation from all states that respect the nuclear non-proliferation regime.

«The militarization of Belarus not only undermines trust in international law but also definitively turns Minsk into an accomplice in Russian nuclear blackmail,» the statement reads. «The audacity of Moscow and Minsk, which have deliberately crossed all «red lines» of the NPT, cannot remain without a strong consolidated response and systemic deterrence of both regimes by the Euro-Atlantic community and the entire world.»

An effective response to the Russian-Belarusian saber-rattling near NATO borders, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, should include a sharp increase in sanctions pressure on Moscow and Minsk, a significant increase in support for Ukraine, which directly deters both regimes from further expansion into Europe, an increase in the presence of allies on NATO's eastern flank, and deepening security cooperation with Ukraine.
