Dublin Central Election: Sinn Féin Leads Polls Amid Immigration Debate and Voter Concerns

Sinn Féin and Fine Gael are campaigning in Dublin Central. Immigration is a key issue, but cost of living and housing dominate voter concerns. Sinn Féin's Janice Boylan leads polls, while Fine Gael's Ray McAdam advocates for a government voice.

Sinn Féin and Fine Gael are actively campaigning in Dublin Central, where former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern's recent comments on immigration have sparked debate. The Irish Times polling indicates immigration is the third most important issue for 12% of voters, behind the cost of living (33%) and house prices (24%).

Sinn Féin candidate Janice Boylan, leading the polls at 21% (ahead of Social Democrats' Daniel Ennis at 18%), focused on the cost of living, housing, and childcare. During a canvass with party leader Mary Lou McDonald, Boylan dismissed Ahern's immigration remarks as «bad form» if accurately described. While many interactions were positive, some young men shouted «traitors» at the Sinn Féin team, accusing them of betraying republicanism.

Fine Gael candidate Ray McAdam, a long-time councillor, emphasized the benefit of electing a Government TD to address local issues, contrasting this with the three existing Opposition TDs. He faced criticism on special needs policies but highlighted his ability to influence ministers. Another voter expressed concern about far-right politics and the misuse of national symbols. Both candidates largely avoided extensive commentary on Ahern's immigration controversy.
