Call for English Subtitles on Irish Language Public Information Materials

A reader has suggested that public information posters and videos presented in the Irish language should include English subtitles to enhance public comprehension and promote language learning.

David Doran of Bagenalstown, Co Carlow, noted that while increased exposure to Irish is beneficial, approximately 80 percent of the population is not proficient in the language. Consequently, essential public information conveyed solely in Irish may not be fully understood by a significant portion of the public.

Doran proposed that Irish-language materials could feature smaller English subtitles. Alternatively, if the main text is in English, smaller Irish subtitles could be included. He believes this approach would not only ensure clarity of public messages but also gradually expand the Irish vocabulary of the general populace through consistent exposure.
