Taoiseach Micheál Martin stated that October's Budget must balance prudence with urgent needs, acknowledging pressures from the rising cost of living. Speaking at the 84th Fianna Fáil Ard Fheis in Dublin, he emphasized providing sustainable, permanent help and committed to making sustained investment in mental health supports a defining achievement of the current government.
Martin defended the government's housing record, noting that 177,000 houses and 50,000 apartments have been built since 2020. The Ard Fheis coincides with the party's centenary. Delegates will debate 101 resolutions, including immigration system reforms and a proposal to give all members a say in selecting a Presidential candidate after Jim Gavin's controversial candidature last year.
Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern will attend the conference, expressing annoyance that his immigration comments overshadowed the event. Fianna Fáil, once dominant, suffered losses in 2011 but returned as the largest Dáil grouping with 48 seats after the 2024 General Election. The party, currently in coalition with Fine Gael, will hand over the Taoiseach's office next year and faces strong competition from parties like Sinn Féin in the next election.
