Bank of Ireland Warns Customers of «Significantly Overcharged» Card Scam

Bank of Ireland warns card users about a scam where customers are significantly overcharged at payment terminals, especially in busy venues. Head of fraud, Nicola Sadlier, reports increased incidents, urging customers to always check the amount before tapping their card. The bank advises vigilance and immediate reporting of suspicious charges.

Bank of Ireland has issued a warning to card users about a scam where customers are being «significantly overcharged» at the point of payment. This fraud typically occurs in bars, cafes, or restaurants where a higher amount is entered on the card terminal than the bill or verbally stated amount.

Nicola Sadlier, head of fraud with Bank of Ireland, noted an increase in reports of this scam. Fraudsters exploit busy environments and customer distraction, relying on individuals not checking the terminal amount before tapping or entering their card and PIN. Sadlier emphasized, «The key message is simple: check the total before you tap.»

The bank advises customers to always check the terminal before completing a transaction, be cautious if pressured, avoid handing their card to others, enable transaction alerts, and regularly review bank statements. If an incorrect charge is noticed, customers should contact their bank immediately using official contact details. Bank of Ireland continues to invest in fraud monitoring and customer protection.
