Asbestos-containing materials have been removed from roads and footpaths in Waterford city following a fire at a commercial premises on Tycor Avenue, at the old Jute Factory, on Saturday, May 9, around 6:30 PM. The fire was controlled the next day. Waterford City and County Council confirmed asbestos in the fire-damaged structure and debris, but air monitoring did not detect elevated asbestos fibre concentrations.

Clean-up works are being carried out by trained personnel, with asbestos removed from surrounding roads, footpaths, and ongoing work on external areas of private houses and gardens. Daily air monitoring consistently shows no elevated asbestos fibre levels, remaining below the limit of detection. Extensive clean-up operations are expected to continue for at least another week.

Tycor Avenue, Griffith Place, and Ard na Greine will remain closed during contractor hours for operational safety, reopening in the evenings. The HSE advises those in the immediate area not to touch debris, ash, or soot, avoid brushing debris or cutting grass, and to clean footwear before entering homes. For dust or debris inside, gentle cleaning with gloves and damp cloths is recommended, with used materials sealed and disposed of by the Council’s contractor.
